Cibao International Airport: North region takes off

Aeropuerto Internacional del Cibao: Despega la región norte

From the moment of its inauguration, the Cibao International Airport has played a leading role in the Northern Region of the country, as it has become one of its most important institutions.

Being the third largest in the Dominican Republic, this airport has three (3) characteristics, since it is an international, domestic (local flights) and cargo terminal. Of the three, the most important and most used is the international terminal.

It has modern and state-of-the-art facilities, carrying out its operations efficiently and quickly, regarding the registration and boarding of passengers and the handling of luggage. It has a large parking lot (more than 1,250 vehicles), aircraft hangars, cargo areas, warehouse, rent cars, airline offices, fire station, VIP lounge, ambassadors' lounge and offices for government entities, among other facilities. .

The Cibao International Airport Corporation was created on March 29, 1978, with the support and direction of businessmen José Armando Bermúdez, Víctor Espaillat, Manuel Arsenio Ureña, José Augusto Imbert, Mario Cáceres and Carlos S. Fondeur. It is governed by Decree 185-000, which authorizes its operations and international aviation agreements. It was founded on January 16, 2000.

The Cibao International Airport was inaugurated on March 18, 2002, in the area of Licey al Medio, a community belonging to the province of Santiago de los Caballeros. It began its operations with two daily direct flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico, from American Airlines. In the following months of that year of 2002, already other important airlines, such as Jet Blue Airways, Delta Airlines, North American Airlines and Continental Airlines, began to carry out regular flights to and from different North American cities.

Shortly after, in 2005, a process of expansion of the Cibao International Airport facilities began, with the reconstruction of the east and west areas of the terminal, and the enlargement of the user area. A second floor was also added to the terminal and three (3) boarding bridges.

For the year of 2007, the runway was extended, since 400 meters were added to it. From time to time, arrangements and expansions of areas are made, based on international requirements and the needs for efficiency and improvement of service to users.

Very recently, the Cibao International Airport obtained Level 3 Optimization accreditation from the Airport Carbon Accreditation program of the International Aviation Council, whose purpose is to manage and reduce carbon emissions from airports around the world.

The new expansion of the air terminal has been reported for the beginning of 2022, with an investment of US$300 million, with which it seeks to expand the aircraft movement and parking platform, expanding the runway from 2,600 meters to almost 3,000 meters . The design is modern, efficient and environmentally friendly. It is indicated that it will have sufficient capacity to meet current and future demand for the next 20 years.

Since its opening, this airport has maintained a sustained increase, both in the number of flights and in the number of passengers.

Already for the year 2006, it received more than 15,000 flights and more than 950,000 passengers, while in 2007 new routes and more frequency were added to the routes that were already operating, managing to transport an average of more than a million passengers each year.

Despite the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Cibao International Airport has been one of the least affected worldwide. For the year 2021, the number of flights and passengers has been recovered. According to OAG studies and published on CNN, in the month of February 2021, the New York-Santiago route ranked sixth as one of the busiest in the world.

Having facilities such as those of the Cibao International Airport represents prestige for the region, clearly indicating its economic importance.

The aforementioned fact of the expansion of the air terminal, with the strong financial investment, gives us an idea of its relevance in the entire northern area, as a source of development.

As we know, since it was put into operation 20 years ago, one of the main contributions it offers is that it is not necessary to travel long distances so that travelers, family members and close friends can move.

Residents and visitors from Santiago, La Vega, San Francisco de Macorís, Espaillat (Moca), Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), Cotuí, Bonao and other Cibao cities benefit from the airport's location.

From the point of view of job creation, the institution has a significant number of direct jobs. To them are added the employees of government institutions and those of private companies that work there.

Taxi drivers who provide services to passengers and other companies that offer services to and from the air terminal are also beneficiaries.

It is estimated that this terminal mobilizes around 4,000 people daily, including travelers and people who go to pick them up or take them, which represents an important economic activity.

Regarding environmental sustainability, the Airport has obtained the certification of the "Airport Carbon Accreditation" program of the International Civil Aviation Organization and the Ministry of the Environment of our country, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

 The institution has also made important investments in new infrastructures in photovoltaic plants, completing 3.0 megawatts, which supply the 80% with energy to the facilities of the entire terminal, including the private companies and public institutions that operate there.

 The Environmental Management and Public Relations Team of this Airport carries out frequent reforestation activities, waste management and educational programs among young students, in an effort to create greater awareness and achieve a sustainable environment.

After reviewing the great and varied contributions made by this airport entity to the northern region in particular and to the rest of the nation in general, we have no doubts about its relevance as one of the institutions with the greatest impact on the productivity of the airport. Cibao.
